The Boys of Summer
June 18 - August 1, 2004

» Don't miss this year's Boys of Summer: Second Inning exhibition! (more info)

The Ironwood Gallery is pleased to present a unique exhibition and sale of baseball-themed works of art by five established artists in wood, clay, glass and mixed media. We welcome you to visit the gallery and join us in this special celebration of our national pastime.

Mark Sfirri delights the baseball fan in all of us with his “Rejects From the Bat Factory” Series, as exhibited in the “30 Years of Woodturning in America” at the Smithsonian and Yale University art galleries. These whimsical works are created via a multi-axis woodturning technique and are prime examples of Sfirri’s unique talents.

Ceramic artist Richard Newman sets a new standard in the art of trompe l’oeil with his stoneware catcher’s mitt and baseball gloves. Until actually touched, the reality of each piece appears to be a well-worn leather glove.

Noted Canadian wood turner Michael Hosaluk has created a series of wooden baseballs in his own unique style; a number of them signed by the artists in the exhibition.

Glass muralist Michael Dupille uses kilnformed glass to create scenes from a game, such as the view through a chain link fence at the umpire and batter, freezing the moment of “time out” or his well-known “American Pie” stadium construction.

Richard Rockford uses “found objects” to create a mixed media baseball trilogy that features authentic old baseball mementos including boards from a home run fence, bats and signage from days long past.
